As the entire world is digitally connected with the abundant use of smart phones, tourism applications are capable of changing the landscape of tourism and tourist behavior, thus enhancing the tourist experience. The project, “LOCOMOTE: A GPS Enabled Traveler’s Guide” is developed envisioning the emerging potential of tourism development through the use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Nepal.
ICT in tourism has manifested as one of the most well suited sectors to mobile technology and mobile applications. Mobile applications are proven to keep consumers engaged with a brand as they are on the move. One of the prominent features, Location- based services (LBS), add value by exploiting knowledge of a mobile device’s location. With modern legislation and interest in utilizing Geo-spatial information for providing practically useful information to users of mobile services.
“Locomote: A GPS Enabled Traveler’s Guide” involves the design, implementation of an android mobile application for tourists, helping them retrieve information efficiently according to their Point of Interest (POI) at right place in real time with personalized setup and location sensitiveness. It also allows them to retrieve their current location and share it through the use of Short Messaging Service.
Tourist manually visit multiple independent websites, mobile applications to plan their trip. The main aim of this project is to build an Android application that helps the tourists locate their Points of Interest and also supports a messaging service to send ones location with a single application. This application is a form of e-tourism, which deploys GPS, thus simplifying tourist’s interactions with devices and people around them.
