The focus of our project will be on protection of Asiatic Elephants in southern
Nepal and prevention of wild elephant attacks. The project examines the areas of
Human Elephant Conflict in Nepal. The project identifies the origin, causes and
costs of Human Elephant Conflict. The project looks into Human Elephant
Conflict in eastern, central and western Terai region of Nepal. The project delves
extensively into Human Elephant Conflict in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts
of easter Terai. The project raises concerns about declining forest area and
increasing human population, which are mentioned as a cause for Human
Elephant Conflict.
The project also includes description of wildlife conservation programs and
methods used in wildlife conservation. A main focus of the project is the study of
use of technology in wildlife conservation and the effects of use of technology in
wildlife conservation. The project also comprises description of organizations
involved in wildlife conservation an technologies used by them.
As a means to mitigate Human Elephant Conflict, the project includes the
development of an application. The application, called “SMS Based Wild
Elephant Warning System”, allows the sender to send a large number of messages
at once, quickly, without having to enter the recipient mobile numbers by typing.
The application provides flexible features that allow sender to send automatically
generated warning SMS messages. SMS is used because of it universality and
extremely high open rates.
