Today telemedicine is not a new technology, but it is a novel approach for many
developing countries like Nepal, and in fact, it may have more profound impact on these
countries than developed nations due to unmet demands for health and
unprecedented health related challenges. In the context of Nepal, telemedicine is
rising and currently being implemented, though on a pilot scale - most of them by
private health institutions. The main purpose of this project work is to explore the
development of telemedicine application in Nepal, with particular reference to
develop and implement website and desktop application providing telemedicine
services.
As an attempt to understand the working of telemedicine, the telemedicine project of
Kathmandu Model Hospital was studied. Kathmandu Model Hospital, the medical
partner of NREN, with the support of NREN and Nepal Wireless have initiated a pilot
project on 2006, which connects more than 80 Km far rural community hospital
through setting up wireless network.
In this project work, Telemedicine and Consultation in Nepal, Symptoms Recognition
application and dynamic website was developed. It has two parts, one is video
conferencing between doctors and patients and the other is Symptoms Recognition
application done in python. From this application, patients can choose their symptoms
in the symptoms list and then can view the resulted output disease according to the
symptoms provided by them and also can view the treatment procedure of those
diseases and this application also provides information about the different types of
health tips, home treatment and prevention regarding different diseases.
The project Telemedicine and Consultation in Nepal fulfills the need of development
and deployment of telemedicine applications and website while improving the
medical assistance, allowing a large number of people to have specialized medical
care.
